Toxicologists plan and carry out laboratory and field studies to identify, monitor and evaluate the impact of toxic materials and radiation on human and animal health, and on the health and current status of the environment, as well as the impact of future technology. Toxicology is the study of how harmful effects may occur in humans, other animals, plants and the environment and how they can be avoided or minimised'.

Toxicology can be divided into eight distinct job areas:

  • industrial;
  • pharmaceutical;
  • academic;
  • clinical;
  • forensic;
  • regulatory;
  • occupational;
  • eco-toxicology.  

Toxicology is an interdisciplinary science which draws from diverse fields including biology, chemistry, biochemistry, pharmacology, mathematics, physiology, pathology, immunology and genetics

Toxicologists work covers many different areas, for example:

  • industrial toxicologists work in the development of products
  • pharmaceutical toxicologists carry out tests on new drugs
  • university toxicologists lecture and carry out their own research
  • clinical toxicologists, who may have a medical and toxicology qualification
  • forensic toxicologists deal with poisons and drugs
  • ecotoxicologists study the effects of chemicals on the environment
  • regulatory toxicologists are most likely to work for the government
  • occupational toxicologists measure the effects of chemicals on human health. 

Toxicologists are employed by pharmaceutical and food manufacturers, biotechnology companies, governments, universities, hospitals, research centres and consulting firms
