In India, where the competition is cut throat; where the academic curriculum often lags behind the industry requirements, and where the youth are increasingly seeking fulfillment at workplace; internships have emerged as a powerful tool to address all these needs and an almost certain way to get ahead.

Imagine applying for your dream job once you complete your studies; nothing says you are the best candidate for the job better than a few internships on your resume.

Let’s start with the story of Priyanka from Sir M Visvesvaraya Institute of Technology, Bangalore. One year into her college, she got the opportunity to do a prestigious internship with Harvard University. After writing zillion letters, she finally got into the Laboratory for Advanced Biomaterials and Stem Cell Based Therapeutics at the Harvard Medical School.

On her first day, as she entered the laboratory, she was welcomed with the sight of complex equipments, undergraduate and postgraduate students, and even two Nobel Laureates. She talked about books, movies, politics and science with her new colleagues that day and realized that labs are in fact more fun.

She worked on localized and on demand drug delivery from self assembled nano-fibrous gels for the prevention and recurrence of brain tumors. She worked closely with scientists, clinicians, and industry representatives.

Apart from the practical experience, she was taught a dozen techniques during her first week by different graduate students who are her friends till date.

The Principal Investigator of the lab spent a lot of time with her providing invaluable guidance. During her internship period, she also did trekking and para sailing.

The internship with Harvard Medical School paved way to Johns Hopkins University for Masters!

The next story is of Siddharth Kumar, a Mechanical Engineering student from VIT, Vellore. He did an internship with Ester Industries and Apollo Tyres where he learned practicalities of his branch. He was placed in companies but he before his joining, he interned with a startup in the Marketing team which turned out to be a great chance for learning and professional development.

The start-up culture and environment impressed him and he was soon working on Digital and Social Media Marketing which included planning Facebook campaigns, working on Google Adwords and SEO, running Instagram ads and so on.

The internship not only helped him get exposure to the marketing sector but was an opportunity to develop skills and knowledge for the career development! By the end of his internship, he was offered a PPO which he accepted.

He is now heading the Digital Marketing for the very same start-up.
