Jorhat Science Centre and Planetarium inaugurated- 7-Jul-2013

Jorhat (Assam): The Jorhat science centre and planetarium were inaugurated by  Union Culture Minister Chandresh Kumari Katoch.

The centre, which is spread over 1500 sq m and built at a coast of Rs five crore on the banks of historic Rajmo Pukhuri (tank) was dedicated to the people of Assam by Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi in the presence of the union minister.

The science centre is the 44th in the country and would provide experiment-based learning ambience for the school children to inculcate a spirit of enquiry, foster creative talent and develop scientific temper in the community as a whole, she said.

The science centers are the only means for sharing knowledge and to make it more interesting for students and common people, specially the rural masses and mothers, Katoch said adding a revolution in science and technology had started in the country based on first prime minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru's dream of a modern India.

The science centre and the planetarium here are the second in Assam and were conceived, designed and developed by National Council of Science Museums (NCSM), union ministry of culture with support from the Assam Science Technology and Environment Council of the state government.

The science centre has galleries on the story of oil deposits and extraction in addition to a digital planetarium, a Science Park and activities for students.
