The National Institute of Epidemiology (NIE) is a medical research organisation located in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. NIE conducts research including interventional studies, disease modelling and health systems, conducts epidemiological investigations and clinical trials of traditional remedies through Indian Council for Medical Research (ICMR).

The National Institute of Epidemiology (NIE) was established in 1999 by merging the Central JALMA Institute for Leprosy (CJIL Field Unit), Avadi with the Institute for Research in Medical Statistics (IRMS), Chennai.

The broad objectives of the Institute cover Development of human resources in epidemiology and bio-statistics, Networking of the various ICMR and non-ICMR Institutes at the national level for epidemiological purposes, and Consultancy.

Courses: NIE has been conducting MPH (Epidemiology and Health Systems) programme of the Sree Chitra Thirunal Institute of Medical Sciences and Technology. The Institute is also recognised by the University of Madras for research leading to Ph.D. degrees in the areas of epidemiology and bio-statistics.

Other important works of this institution are to improve job facilities to degree holders, create awareness on cleanliness, public health and implement the proposals of the Ayush committee.   

The Master of Applied Epidemiology comprises of field work.

Further, it provides training in Bio statistics for students and medical professionals.
