INTRODUCTION:

The National Geophysical Research Institute (NGRI) is a geoscientific research organization established under CSIR India in Hyderabad, India in 1961. It is supported by over 200 scientists and other technical staff whose research activities are published in several journals of national and international interest.

Research arenas covered by this institute include hydrocarbon and coal exploration, mineral exploration, exploration and management of groundwater resources, earthquake hazard assessment, structure of earth's interior and its evolution, and geophysical instrument development.

The major areas where research has been carried out are:
  • Hydrocarbons
  • Minerals
  • Groundwater
  • Eathquake hazard
  • Lithosphere
  • Environmental Geophysics

The following are the projects succesfully carried out in NGRI by the eminent researchers and scientists:

  • Study of satellite and land gravity and magnetic (G-M) data for understanding the geodynamics of the Indian lithosphere and exploration of natural resources
  • Study of Mesozoic sediments for hydrocarbon exploration in central india
Application of magneto-tellurics to natural resources exploration and lithospheric studies
  • Deep resistivity sounding (DRS) and Controlled source audio magneto-telluric (CSAMT) studies for upper crustal structure
  • Exploration of gas-hydrates along Indian continental margins
Electrical and electromagnetic (EM) field and physical modelling for shallow sub-surface studies
  • Petrology, geochemistry of the mafic-ultramafic and alkaline rocks of Dharwar Craton; Bundelkhand; Central India and Deccan flood basalt province and mineralization through space and time
  • High-resolution multi-parameter airborne geophysical surveys for mineral, oil & groundwater exploration and development of interpretational techniques for airborne data
  • 2D/3D Seismic studies in various coal basins of India, site characterization and shallow geophysical studies for mineral exploration, engineering and archaeological projects.
  • Groundwater management in hard rock aquifers including resources augmentaion and protection from geochemical contamination
  • Quaternary geo-chronological studies (paleo-seismology / paleo-tsunami, paleo-climatology and exhumation) in the NE India and Andaman Islands
  • Environmental geophysics-development of methodology for protection & conservation of soil and groundwater in dryland agriculture environment
  • Delineation of groundwater resources in the Deccan trap region of Chandrabhaga river basin
  • Application of synthetic aperture radar interferometry (InSAR) to measure ground deformation for seismic hazard studies in and around India
  • Study of seismogenic earthquake sources in SCR and Kopili lineament, NE India for seismic hazard assessment
  • Rigidity and Kinematics of the Indian Plate and its margins by space geodesy techniques using GPS,GLONNAS,GALLILEO satellite systems and VLSI
  • Study of the Indian plate geo-dynamics through intense seismic and GPS campaign mode monitoring
  • Lithospheric structure, deformation and tectonics of the Eastern Himalaya and Andaman arc regions
  • Thermal and geodynamic evolution of Indian lithosphere and seismogensis of earthquakes.
  • Evolution of the lithospheric mantle and the crust in the Dharwar and the Bastar Craton:Petrological, age and isotopic constraints
  • Late Quaternary Paleoclimatic and paleoceanographic studies using Isotopic and trace elemental proxies from ocean sediments, corals and speleothems
  • Behavior of hydrous minerals at the earths mantle pressures
Indian lithosphere and seismicity from passive and active seismological experiments
  • Ecology and environmental studies in and around greater Hyderabad
  • Environmental impact assessment and remediation of inorganic and organic pollutants derived from mining and industrial activities
