 INTRODUCTION:

The Central Mechanical Engineering Research Institute (CMERI) is the apex R&D institute for mechanical engineering under the aegis of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR). Being the only national level research institute in this field, CMERI's mandate is to serve industry and develop mechanical engineering technology so that India's dependence on foreign collaboration is substantially reduced in strategic and economy sectors. Besides, the institute is facilitating innovations and inventions for establishing the claims of Indian talent in international fields where Indian products shall ultimately compete.
Major departments and field of research in CMERI:

  • Robotics and Automation
  • Surface Robotics
  • Embedded Systems
  • Electronics and Instrumentation
  • Heat Power Engineering
  • Process Plant Engineering and Pressure Testing
  • Chemistry
  • Biomimetics
  • Machine Design and Development
  • Tribology
  • Manufacturing Process
  • Condition monitoring
  • Rapid prototyping and tooling
  • Farm Machinery and Post Harvest Technology
  • NDT and Metallurgy

CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE FIELD OF SCIENCE:

CMERI, Durgapur has credibility considerable experience in the field of RLA and failure analysis of different power plant components, resulting in significant improvement of power plant and component life. This Institute has a strong interface with various power plants over a long period of time. It is to be mentioned that Life Assessment activity is one of the thrust areas of this Institute.

CMERI is the first organization in India to have installed the Stereolithography Apparatus (SLA). CMERI has in place a strong quality assurance system as per ISO-9001. To further strengthen the commitment to quality and International Recognition through MRA/NABL-APLAC-ILAC , CMERI's Metrology Group has acquired NABL accreditation in dimension , mass ,density and volume .

R & D ACTIVITIES:

The major R & D activities carried out in the current plan are:

  • Generation of Hydrogen through Thermo-Chemical Gasification of Biomass
  • Drying Systems to improve Grain Quality in North East India
  • Indigenous Technology Development For Offshore Placer Mining
  • Design And Development Of A Steel-Based Bullock Cart
  • Design And Development Of A Plant For Making Parchment Like Leather Material From Chrome Shavings
  • Automatic Machine For Sharpening/ Resharpening Of CTC Tea Rollers
  • Automatic fruit sorting and grading machine
  • Development of autonomous underwater vehicle
  • Development of enhanced ROV for iperating upto to depth of 300m
  • Development of automated rollend bearing test stand
  • Reduction of residual stresses and improvement in end straightness of rails
  • Development of crankshaft for  35HP three cylinder SONALIKA tractor engine
  • Application of photo catalysis for utilisation of solar energy in destruction  of  water bound pollutant
  • Cricket bowling machine

CMERI is fast growing in stature as a solution provider in Embedded Technology Systems by virtue of the services it is extending through the Integrated R&D & Training Centre in Embedded Systems. This centre is already offering application-specific training courses in Embedded Systems Technology and has further started functioning as a technology support centre for embedded systems based product development.

For facilitating demands for design and development of products tailored to commercial and industrial requirements in India, the centre is equipped with state-of-the-art facilities.
